When Our Kids’ Profiles Brought Us Together Online
I never thought my adventure with online romance on justsingleparentdating.com would begin with a photo of my daughter dressed as a fairy. And yet — that’s exactly what happened.
As a single mother to my ten-year-old daughter Lena, I was used to the daily routine. Mornings in a rush, school, work, home, homework, bedtime stories. Dates? Well, they had long ago slipped to the bottom of my priority list. After all, who in this role even has time to go out? And yet, somewhere deep inside, during those quiet evenings, there was a part of me that hoped to find someone to share not only my everyday life, but also a little bit of myself.
One day, partly for fun and partly as a challenge, I decided to join a site for single parents. I browsed the profiles and uploaded a picture of Lena — of course, dressed as a fairy, beaming with joy. Beneath the photo I wrote a few words about her and me. “Fairy mom looking for someone who isn’t scared of a little everyday magic.” I chuckled to myself and hit “PUBLISH”
It didn’t take long before a message appeared in my inbox. It was from him — Kurt. Even his photo caught my attention. He was standing in a park with a boy dressed as a superhero. The caption read: “Dad of Superman looking for an ally in the daily mission of parenting.” I smiled.
“Do you think your fairy would like to meet my superhero?” - he wrote.
I laughed, because his message felt so genuine and light — exactly what I needed at that moment.
We started messaging each other every day. We talked about the kids, our work, our favorite books and TV shows. We laughed at our parenting mishaps and shared bits of advice, even though neither of us thought of ourselves as an expert. In those simple conversations, I discovered someone special — kind, sensitive, and with a sense of humor that could brighten even the dullest of days.
One evening, after another long chat, Kurt wrote:
“How about we let our kids meet at the park sometime? If they hit it off, that would give us a good excuse for a longer chat.”
I agreed immediately. Even though I felt a bit nervous — after all, this would be our first meeting in real life — I knew it was the right moment.
We met on a Saturday afternoon. Lena ran up to me in her rainbow jacket, and a boy in a blue cap appeared next to her — Alan. They became instant friends, laughing and playing as if they’d known each other forever.
Meanwhile, Kurt and I sat on a bench. The conversation flowed easily, naturally — just like it had in our messages. He told me about his work and how Alan had taught him patience. I shared my thoughts on raising Lena. Suddenly, I realized how comfortable I felt in his company — as if we had known each other much longer than just a few weeks.
Time slipped by unnoticed. When the kids finally tired of playing, they looked happy and a little reluctant to go home.
-“Next time, we could all go for pizza” - Kurt suggested, and a warm feeling spread through my chest.
-“I’d love that,” - I replied, knowing this was about more than just pizza.
As we walked home, Lena held my hand and chattered about her new friend. But my thoughts kept drifting to Kurt— and to the honest, simple way he had appeared in my life.
That’s how it began — quietly, with photos of our kids in costume. Today I realize that those profiles weren’t only telling the stories of our children; somehow, they had brought us together and given me hope that love can appear in the most ordinary of moments.
Sometimes all it takes is one click and a heartfelt smile for a new story to begin.
