I Wasn’t Looking for Anyone… and I Found Everything
They say that when you stop looking — that’s exactly when life surprises you the most. And while it might sound like an overused quote from an Instagram meme, I’m living proof that there’s more truth in those words than we’d like to admit.
My name is Sophie, I’m 34, and I’m the mom of a nine-year-old whirlwind named Alex. I came across Just Single Parents Dating almost... by accident. My friend Emma — also a single mom — sent me a link with a message: “Just make a profile. You’re already spending your evenings with wine and Netflix.” She wasn’t wrong.
I wasn’t looking for anyone. Honestly. I had made peace with the idea that if someone came along, great. And if not — that was fine too. I had my life, my little troublemaker, my remote job, and an ambitious plan to learn how to cook something beyond pasta with pesto.
So I made a profile. No big expectations, no retouched photos, and no cheesy bio like “I love long walks and wine.” Instead, I wrote:
“I have a son, two cats, and a failed curry recipe. Looking for conversations, not miracles.”
And then Liam messaged me. His first line was:
“My son says my curry tastes like a sock, so maybe we should team up?”
I burst out laughing. And I replied.
That’s how it started. No fireworks, no rom-com tension. Just conversation. About kids, life, exhaustion, honey tea, and instant soups. Evenings started to feel different — once Alex was asleep, I’d make myself tea and wait for Liam’s message.
I felt understood. I didn’t have to explain why I couldn’t answer the phone after 8 p.m. or why I suddenly disappeared for an hour — because my little one had woken up screaming. Liam got it. He was a parent too. Raising his seven-year-old daughter, Ellie, on his own. And he had that same mix of strength and fatigue in his voice — the one all single parents seem to carry.
After two weeks of talking, we decided to meet. A neutral place — a café near the park. I was tense, and he showed up with a juice stain on his shirt and a smile that could disarm any anxiety.
We talked like old friends. No awkwardness, no pretending. After an hour, I knew I wanted to see him again. And then again. And again.
Our kids met a few weeks later — and instantly clicked. Ellie braided bows into Alex’s hair (which he proudly wore the entire day), and Liam and I watched from a bench, holding hands like teenagers.
Today... we’re together. I still cook terrible curry, but now we do it together. The kids sometimes argue, and Liam’s cats hate mine. But us? We’re a team.
Sometimes I wonder how it’s possible that I wasn’t looking for anyone... and I found everything. Maybe it’s grace. Maybe it’s luck. Or maybe that’s just what real love looks like — not the fairy tale kind, but the everyday kind, in sweatpants and with a mug of coffee.
So if you’re sitting there right now with a cup in your hand, thinking this isn’t for you — allow yourself one conversation. One click. One “hey.” Because who knows? You might find everything, right when you least expect it.
